GMDD is having the painting of almost half the order done by AMF to speed the delivery process as the paint shop in London is not keeping up with production. Retirements this month include: HR616 2102 on August 13 (crankshaft failure) HR412W 3587 on August 9 (fire) M420Ws 3506,3570 on August 30 (failures) SD40 5171,5220 on August 9th and 7th (engine failures) GP40-2LW 9536 to HELM on August 7 for KCS Dispositions include: SW1500 1516(GTW) sold to Kelloggs in Battle Creek MI C630s 2028,2038 and M636 2317 to Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia for parts to keep their fleet active into 1997. DETOURS...due to a 3 day closure of the York Subdivision to install a new bridge over the widened Highway 401 in Pickering, all freight traffic between Toronto and Montreal was diverted through downtown Toronto using the Kingston, Bala, or Newmarket subdivisions. Several delays were encountered as underpowered trains crawled up the Scarborough junction hill, with several stalling tying up the busy normally passenger only line. The closure began on August 31 at 0700, and was reopened on the evening of September 2 (1600). Added to its own detours, CN hosted 10 eastbound and 12 westbound St Lawrence and Hudson trains detouring between Montreal(Dorval) and Brighton between August 29 and 31st due to a 35 car derailment near Dalhousie Mills (MP 42.8 on the StLH Winchester Sub). SHORTS...CN is closing its car repair shop in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and will perform any future repairs at the yard outdoors...CN finally restored full service on its flood devastated lines in the Quebec Saguenay region on August 16, almost one month after the devastating July 20-21 flooding. As part of an incentive to recapture lost business, VIA which runs its Montreal-Senneterre "SAGUENAY/ABITIBI" passenger service on the CN lines offered 50% fare reductions during all of August...CN has cut 1740 jobs during 1996, almost 16% more than planned, with only 21,500 people left on the payroll by the end of 1996...CN opened its new operations center in Edmonton, Alberta on July 15,1996. The center handles all train movements in western Canada between Winnipeg and Vancouver. 155 people are employed at the center which replaces facilities in Winnipeg Manitoba, Saskatoon Saskatchewan, and Prince George and Kamloops British Columbia. RS23s 8024,25,28,31,33,35,44 all retired on August 13. Stored unserviceable after failures are RS18s 1805,1811,1828,1852, all pending control cab conversion now. Lease notes...Despite having over 120 units on lease, CP leased out to GE (then subleased to SP) 32 units which were stored for the summer downturn. The units were SD40 (SOO) 737,745,756,(CP) 5414,5530,5533,5545,6400, SD40-2 (SOO) 770,771,775,6609,6610,6620, (CP) 785, 5475-5480,5482,5718,5727, 5784,5788,5847,5901,5915. Dispositions include: RS23 8031 to Minnesota Commercial as their number 80 RDC1 90 to Childrens Museum in London, Ontario SW9s 2112,2114,2115,2117 to a private individual IRON HIGHWAY ARRIVES... StL&H received its first Iron Highway train set on September 19, with the train set running from Detroit to Toronto for inspection and setup. The second train set will arrive on September 23, and will run from Detroit to Montreal for setup. After both sets are accepted, initial testing will begin consisting of one trip between Toronto and Montreal for each set to test the equipment as well as the schedule. Revenue service in now set for October 28, 1996 - more than a year behind schedule. OOPS... On August 29,1996 eastbound StL&H train 902 derailed 35 cars at Dalhousie Mills, Ontario (MP 42.8 Winchester Sub). The mishap, believed to be caused by a wheel/truck problem involved several dangerous commodities which resulted in an almost 3 day closure of the Montreal to Toronto mainline. Many trains were held, a total of 22 trains were detoured over the CN using two routes, Brighton to Dorval, or via Smiths Falls to Brockville to Dorval. The line was finally cleared late on August 31. September 23 is the startup date for the 18 week trial by VIA of the self propelled Danish built IC# train set, with the initial service on the Kitchener to Toronto, Ontario route. Departure is 0700 from Kitchener with arrival in Toronto at 0845. Afternoon departure from Hogtown(Toronto) at 1800 with a 1945 arrival back at Kitchener. The second train set will be used in Niagara Falls to Toronto and Kingston to Toronto service.
