This listing of Car Tracing numbers was created so that railfans with telephones could acess all of the numbers at once, and at the same time recive general instructions on how to acess the car tracing capabilities of each railroad system. Plus I have included a few pointers and comments about each system. The Santa Fe Sentinal Info Service is acessed by dialing 1-800-727-2873; when the phone is answered press 1. Next you will recive another prompt; press 1 then #. From there on you will be prompted by the tracing computer about what to do. ATSF's car tracing is the most primitive of all the railroads. Since it only allows you to enter car numbers, not initials it can take a while to reach the desired car if several on the railroad have the same number. Burlington Northern's car trace is acessed at 1-800-342-5123. Once the computer answers press or say 1. Next a female voiced computer will answer and at that time press 1. BN allowes you to trace up to thirty cars or cabosses. The computer does not tell you that to use the same car initials as you did for the previous car, that you press zero (0). When you finish tracing press 0. CP's car tracing number is 1-800-777-4499. When answered, press 7980. This gets you to the CP Rail system computer. The entire CNW system is built into the UP's @ 1-800-634-2204 CSX Touch Trace is reached at 1-800-235-2352. When the computer answers press 2. Thats it! When you are finished press zero. That is all I am going to give you because Conrail dosent like to be bothered ( to put it nicely ) even though it is a computer that answers the phone. I would recomend to you that you do not use Conrails car tracer. KCS Car tracing is available at 1-800-633-0559. In my first version of this I had the number wrong so take note! NYSW. In the first version I gave a number..... get rid of it. It was wrong. NYSW has no cartracing. Norfolk Southern Touch Trace is at 1-800-241-9230. When the Computer answers pesss 222. You can trace 5 cars OR 5 Locomotives at a time but there is no limit on how many times you can trace at one session . To end hang up the phone. When you are tracing you need to use some common sense. If you need help do not opt to talk to a " Service Represenative ". That connects you to a live person that will be quite annoyed to find out that you are just a curious railfan. With all of these systems except Santa Fe, you need to use the Reporting marks on the equipment. To enter a letter you need to find it on the keypad of your telephone. For example to enter a " M " you would press 61 because " M " is on the 6 key and it is the first letter on the 6 key. Q&Z aren't on a keypad. To make a " Q " press 11, to make a " Z " press 12. With this now in the vast libraries of Trainnet it will be possible for the railfan to track the cars coming and giong from his/her favorite local industry, track where an unusual pice of equipment is, or in the case of CP, CSX and Union Pacific, where their favorite lomotive is!
