A turnover is the act and the documents that accompany the transition between the tour of duty of one dispatcher to his relief dispatcher. The document below is a chief dispatchers turnover transcribed exactly from the original documents. The turnover written in the dispatcher special short hand gives the full status of the railroad as will as the operating plan for the railroad as envisioned by the departing chief dispatcher. The turnover was prepared on the same thin tissue paper once used for train orders so many copies could be made on a typewriter so each man could have his copy as will as a copy for the record and superintendent. This particular turnover dates from the period on the Santa Fe when the old rule book was still in effect and operation by train orders was still the way the railroad worked in dark territory (non signaled). This turnover is from the now just closed Amarillo dispatching center. The first sheet gives a brief and complete over view of the territory and is commonly referred to as the turnover individually. The subsequent sheets are the wires sent by the man being relived to set the plan in motion and provide the full details of the situation.
