Thomas M. Downs, President and Chairman of the passenger rail corporation, today announced that Mark Cane, a former vice president of the Burlington Northern Railroad, will become Chief Executive Officer of Amtrak's Intercity business unit, headquartered in Chicago, effective Feb. 1, 1996. The Board also approved the appointment of Daniela R. Winkler, who has served as Acting General Counsel since November 1995, as Vice President and General Counsel, effective Jan. 19, 1996. In announcing Cane's appointment, Downs said, "Mark brings to Amtrak exceptional strategic and analytical skills in addition to a career in railroading that began as a cook on an Amtrak dining car when he was a college student. Those skills, combined with his vision and enthusiasm for the future of the business unit, provide just the mix of talent needed." Cane had served in various capacities at Burlington Northern, beginning as an Operations Department management trainee and rising to vice president, Equipment Management; vice president, Service Design and vice president, Intermodal. He earned a B.A. in economics at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn, and an M.B.A. at the University of Minnesota, in Minneapolis - more - - 2 - ATK-96-16 The Intercity business unit is one of three distinct businesses in the Amtrak structure and operates most of the corporation's long-distance trains in addition to a number of corridor services in the Midwest. The business unit oversees a $920 million operating budget and operates 22,000 route miles with 6,000 employees in 41 states. In accepting the appointment, Cane said, "I am excited about the opportunity to join the Amtrak team. Amtrak has accomplished a great deal over the last two years. We still face many significant challenges. I am confident we can give our customers the level of service they expect and deserve." Of Winkler, Downs said, "Amtrak is extremely fortunate that Daniela has accepted this appointment. Few corporations in America attract persons of her talent and credentials, and the fact that she comes from within our ranks only increases our pride." Winkler received her Bachelor's and Law degrees from Harvard University where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review. She was Law Clerk to Judge Louis F. Oberdorfer of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Prior to joining Amtrak, Winkler was a partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Williams and Connolly. She came to Amtrak in 1992 as Deputy General Counsel for Litigation. # # #
