BMT LINES

Before the IRT used numbers to designate their 
routes the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Company 
(BMT) had numbers on their routes.  The numbers 
were retained after unification in the early 
1940's and continued until the mid 60's when the 
NYCTA reorganized all the BMT & IND lines.  The 
information shown below was taken from a reprint 
of the BMT 1939/40 World's Fair map.  Many of 
these routes still exist but are known as J, L, 
M, N, Q, R, S, Z and many are in part covered by 
IND service - B, D, F

These lines were:

1    Brighton Beach
          Queensboro Plaza to Stillwell Av (via    
          Tunnel)
          57th St to Stillwell Av (via Bridge)
          Times Square to Stillwell Av (via        
          Bridge)

2    4th Avenue (Brooklyn)
          Queensboro Plaza to 95th St (via         
          Tunnel)

3    West End
          Times Square to Stillwell Av (via        
          Bridge)
          Chambers St to Bay Parkway (via          
          Tunnel/via Nassau Loop (Bridge)

4    Sea Beach
          Times Square to Stillwell Av (via        
          Bridge)

5    Culver
          Chambers St to Stillwell Av (via 
          Tunnel)
          Sands St to Stillwell Av (via 5th Av 
          El)

6    5th Av - Bay Ridge (Elevated)
          Sands St to 65th St

7    Brighton-Franklin Av
          Franklin Av to Prospect Park

8    Astoria
          Queensboro Plaza to Ditmars Av

9    World's Fair Flushing
          Queensboro Plaza to Main St

10   Myrtle Av - Chambers St
