There are also fares to Calais Frethun (served by some Paris trains) and to Lille Europe (served by some Brussel/Bruxelles trains) ALL TIMINGS ARE LOCAL & SUBJECT TO CHANGE ***** THIS INFORMATION IS TAKEN FROM THE EUROSTAR BROCHURE ***** (I am cannot be responsible for any errors in what is shown above) I have sampled the Eurostar in both 1st & 2nd class. For someone who has been used to travelling by ferry, hovercraft or jetfoil across the channel it presents a great improvement in travelling by rail from the UK to mainland Europe. Top speeds in Britain are currently 100 mph (160 km/h), on the high speed line in France (between Calais & Lille / Paris) a top speed on 186 mph (300 km/h) is achieved. Check-in is effortless at Waterloo. 20 minutes is all that is required to collect tickets pass through immigration, security and ticket checks. Reservation is compulsory, so you will have a numbered seat to sit in. There are 2 buffet cars on the 18 coach train plus a refreshment trolley serving hot & cold drinks & snacks to passengers in 2nd class. 1st class passengers enjoy, as part of their ticket price, a hot meal of 3 or 4 courses (including wine). A colleague of mine began his meal in the suburbs of Paris and was finishing his coffee coming through Tonbridge! The 'tunnel' itself in more of a 'non-event' than anything else. you are under the channel for about 20 minutes - but the train is so smooth and quiet that you would even know you were in a tunnel except for the fact that it has gone dark outside !! My advice to anyone who is doubtful about travelling through the tunnel is - TRY IT! - You won't want to bob up & down on a ferry in the channel for an hour an a half again ! Since my last upload the service, as you see, has increased in frequency. Certain trains are booked to call at Lille Europe station (adjacent to Lille Flandres station) and some at Calais Frethun (adjacent to absolutely nothing ! - its a bit out of town).
