The Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers ---------------------------------------------- Are you interested in: Modelling in a larger scale ? Operating live-steam locomotives ? A Model railway in your garden ? If your answers are in the affirmative or even if you can only get enthused on a couple of these then have you considered the prospect of narrow gauge railways in the scale 16mm : 1ft running on O gauge (32mm) track giving a prototype 2ft narrow gauge system. Consider too the opportunity of running live-steam models in your own garden, climbing through the rockery to pass through a forest of dwarf conifers before crossing the pond on a simple trestle bridge ... need we go on ! Modelling in this large scale need be no more expensive than working "OO" or "N" gauges. As little as GBP 10 could get you started - live steam will cost you more but electric (or even clockwork) are proven alternatives. The Mamod Steam Railway has provided an excellent starter set for many enthusiasts whilst the LGB system is the nearest 'off the shelf' electric equivalent. Commercialy produced steam loco's, rolling-stock, track and a wide range of components of good quality are readily available. The model railway press features specialist suppliers and regular articles on new products, scratch- building and layout concepts, etc, - however to put yourself right in the '16 mil' scene you need to join the specialist club. The Association of 16mm Narrow Gauge Modellers caters for such needs and in its existence has gained enthusiastic members throughout the UK (... and abroad too). Most members have established their own outdoor narrow gauge railway and a handful even have room for an indoor layout as well ! Whilst O gauge track scales out as 2ft gauge in '16 mil' loco's and stock from 1'6" - 2' 6" gauge prototypes could also be modelled. The builders of n.g. railway equipment had lines in their catalogues which could be gauged to suit the customers' requirments. You will find most '16 mil' people equally flexible in their approach and far from counting rivets on the prototype or painstakingly endeavouring to achieve the correct shade of black for their loco's livery you will soon see that most are just out to enjoy their modelling ... which may mean "bending" the specification a little to get a model that runs well on an outdoor line. Taking your railway into the garden has many advantages - you can make that new stock or pointwork indoors during the winter evenings and move out into the fresh-air with the warmer weather to run those trains and undertake feats of landscaping on an unparalleled scale. We even have members who enjoy running trains in near gale-force conditions or through the snows of mid-winter ! A garden shed or garage gives an out-of- the-house refuge for modelling or operating in inclement weather ... Your railway could start, finish or simply pass through such a building. The Association has two portable layouts of its own and these are exhibited at various venues by members who bring along their own trains. Not only are such gatherings fun to attend but they provide good publicity for the Association and the hobby generally. Doing it your way and getting together to talk and swap ideas are what it's all about. A Club for such a specialised interest is the only real way of sharing the experiance gained by individual modellers. Membership to the Assocaition is open to all - even those who, for reasons of their work or family commitments, are unable to establish a layout of their own. The subscription offers quarterly magazine, garden meetings throughout the summer (... indoor winter gatherings too) and specialist sales sections. The sales side covers precision components, kits, O gauge items for conversions, materials (when available), n.g. books and even members' unwanted models, etc. -----***----- Membership Application Simply fill in and return to the Membership Secretary: Mr E.
