Hungarian Railway News - Late May/Early June 1998 Information and news on Hungarian Railways compiled by Ferenc Joo from Budapest which was circulated amongst members of the "Friends of the Hungarian Railway Group" by e-mail postings. Edited and uploaded by Phil Richards with the kind permission of the compiler. Date: 25-May-98 HI, NEW MAV LIVERY ON V43 1299!!!!! Five V43s are supposed to get a greyish livery to match rebuilt Bhv type cars which are being prepared to give more comfortable suburban services. The first 20 cars are supposed to already be ready and a friend of mine has actually seen them, but I haven't. They will surely enter service by September. Only one V43 has ben repainted yet. They and the cars will have a finish that you can just wipe off graffiti from. Some reports on the weekend of timetable change: SATURDAY, MAY 23. (last day of old timetable) -The 0025 Budapest-Szombathely post train was hauled by M41 2126. -M62 141 departed Szekesfehervar towards Veszprem with a 30+ car freight train smoking like hell, visible even at night. -M41 2211 hauled the 0329 Celldomolk-Zalaegerszeg -M41 2199 first powered the connecting 0415 Uk-Tapolca then the 0523 Tapolca- Csajag trains -M41 2160 hauled the last 0500 Szombathely-Bucharest "Alutus" train via Tapolca -A25 065 was at Ajka works and M40 201 was the station loco at Ajka -M41 2205 worked 0420 Tapolca-Szombathely -An unidentified M41 worked 0500 Tapolca-Balatonszentgyorgy. Where were M61s? -M61 001 worked 0425 Szekesfeherevar-Tapolca -M61 004 worked 0625 Budapest Keleti-Celldomolk from Szekesfehervar, load 12! -M16 010 worked 0715 Budapest Deli-Tapolca from Szekesfehervar, load 12 plus heating van! -M61 002 and M61 020 plus non-working M16 013 were at Tapolca at 5am. At 0630 M61 006 was also there: arrived with a freight from the Uzsa mines? Also present at the shops were M47 2026, 2071 and M41 2105, plus M62 221 with M61 bogies without middle axles: probably awaiting scrapping. -M62 188 powered the 0530 Szombathely-Pecs, presumably as far as Gyekenyes. -M41 2114 was the station loco at Zanka-Koveskal -Present at Szekesfehervar at 9am were: M43 1031, M41 2214, 2164, 2168 M47 2053, 2067, 1031 (yes, they have both M43 and M47 1031s), and M62 243 plus some Bzmots and V43s. -At 1040 at Nyugati I saw: M44 082, M41s 2207, 2118, ZSR 350 018-8 which possibly just arrived from Keleti cause I think I saw the same engine there an hour before but didn't take note of the number -M41 2103 was at Kobanya-Kispest -MDmot 3034 worked the 1045 Budapest Nyugati-Lajosmizse while M41 2113 worked the 1124 Lajosmizse-Kobanya-Kispest -Bzmot 062 was the 1241 Lajosmizse-Kecskemet while M44 201 was at Lajosmizse with freight cars loaded with wood -M43 1082 was shunting freight cars at Ujpest -M44 118 was shunting at Kecskemet. There is possible a shunt move available here wit hthis engine as it attached 2 cars to the back of train 7034, the 1345 Cegled-Kiskunfelegyhaza (Pl 1 to Pl 2) and the train is shown waiting 8 mins in the new timetable 1422/1430 (dep Cegled now at 1350. -At the shops in Kecskemet were M41 2109, M32 2050, M44 152, 156, M28 1002 ( nicely repainted and remote control couplers to work with Bzmot units), V46 054. -Bzmot 062 then worked the 1432 Kecskemet-Lajosmizse -Bzmot 055 worked the 1438 Kecskemet-Kunszentmarton -Bzmot 051 the 1425 Szolnok-Kiskunfelegyhaza -MDmot 3041 the 1430 Kiskunfelegyhaza-Szolnok -MDmot 3007 the 1425 Kunszentmarton-Kecskemet N.B. these two tables have been revamped to provide Szolnok-Lakitelek- Kecskemet and Kunszentmarton-Lakitelek-Kiskunfelegyhaza services -M40 520 shunted the Russian sleepers of the last Puskin express that arrived on the 1630 Kiskunhalas-Kiskunfelegyhaza due to track engineering works between Subotica and Szeged, onto the 'real' Puskin express, that is the cars working between Szeged and Zahony. Doors of the sleepers' were closed so the shunt move was unavailable. -At Szolnok observed M44 032, 148, MDmot 3035, 062. -M41 2198 worked the 1645 Hodmezovasarhely-Budapest semi fast train to Szolnok -M43 1022, 1042 were at Puspokladany at 8pm, as was CFR 60 0877-5 which worked the 1710 Budapest-Deda-Brasov night train (load 8 or so) -The 3 CRF 60/62 engines are supposed to work into Puspokladany for 4 more years. They are usually the same engines unless they break down. -SURPRISE, SURPRISE: as I bailed at Mezopeterd for the stopper back to P. ladany, M44 091 sowed up with two red MDmot-type trailers. Trains 1840 P. ladany-Biharkeresztes and 2038 B.keresztes-P/ladany are supposed to be an M44 for some more time to come, as there are not enough Bzmots at Puspokladany. Possibly trains 2055 P.ladany-B.keresztes, 0428 B.keresztes-P. ladany and 0600 P.ladany-B.keresztes are the same engine and it probably stays on the border for shunting during the day. -Old 400 series trams continue work late evening services in Debrecen. Not surprising as I observed youth drinking and even smoking on the vehicle on their way to Saturday night parties. DKV 482, 486 and 487 were working as well on Sunday morning SUNDAY, MAY 24 (first day of new timetable) -MDmot 3032, M44 128 and M32 2047 were at Nyiregyhaza (10am) -The new semi-fast trains Nyiregyhaza-Mateszalka-Fehergyarmat etc are supposed to be worked by rebuilt InterCity style BZmot units (InterPici) but as the one(s?) for Nyiregyhaza were not yet ready, the service was Bzmot 368 plus two trailers. It is hard to see how they want to run this train with a single air-conned Bzmot car with 36 seats, unless they attach old trailers to it and that means it is not worth the same thing anymore. -A21-057 was observed at the loading facility at Tarcal -Bzmot 171 worked 1135 Szerencs-Hidasnemeti -Brand new "InterPici" Bzmot 401 worked the 0900 Miskolc-Satoraljaujhely IP service and returned light to Miskolc, as the evening return service on Sundays is supplemented by the new Sa.ujhely-Wien Ic/EC service. -Funnily, the Wien-Budapest 1st class and dining cars that are conveyed at the front of the train are left at Budapest and similar cars are attached to the front of the train for the rest of the run to Miskolc/Sa.ujhely. I suppose it has to do wit hinternational/local food prices and being afraid of Hungarians damaging the 1st class car, which is a prioirity for EC services? -V43 1371/M41 2189 worked the Wien-Sa.ujhely EC/IC train to/from Szerencs, with 9 paying passengers on the first day - not bad. 2nd class coaches are the standard OBB compartment cars. On the return trip the train was strengthened by three more DWA-built MAV 2nd class cars, a big need on Sundays between Miskolc-Budapest. But why not attach the cars at Miskolc, there is no need for seven 2nd class cars on an InterCity between Satoraljaujhely and Budapest. The three cars were already at Sa.ujhely when the EC/IC rake arrived. Is it because 9 heavy cars would have been too much for the M41? The gradients are not that big here. -M41 2181 worked from Szerencs the 1055 Miskolc-Satoraljaujhely train, which had two GYSEV cars and 6 MAV cars. This set performed as the 1359 Satoraljaujhely- Celldomolk train which receives cars to Sopron at Budapest, hauled by M41 2201 on the return trip from Sa.ujhely to Szerencs. -M41 2178 worked the 1140 Sa.ujhely-Szerencs local, then the 1005 Budapest- Sa.ujhely train, again on load 8. -The second running track has already been lifted between Bodrogkeresztur-Sa. ujhely, I wonder if they will keep the rest between B.keresztur-Mezozombor? -At Satoraljaujhely the following were lined up for scrapping at the cutting facility here: M32 2007, M40 116, M43 1014, M62 251, M43 1163, M47 1038, M43 1151, M62 237, 172, M40 217, M44 113, M43 1065, M44 135. You can delete this from the lists you have, all of them have been scrapped after 98.01.01 (I have exact dates if anyone needs them). -M41 2146 worked the 1425 Szerencs-Satoraljaujhely on load 8 again -Unusually formed Bzmot 171+Bzmot 172+trailer+trailer+Bzmot 182 set was seen at Szerencs, just arrived from Hidasnemeti. I don't know if the set of 35224 is always coupled to 35215 arriving from Hidasnemeti, or only on Sundays? -A green industrial diesel was also spotted at Felsozsolca -Seen at Miskloc: M47 2039, 2049, M44 089, M43 1050, M41 2190, M62 244 -At Fuzesabony I saw: M43 1046 which shunts the ex-Eger cars onto the ex- Miskolc portion of the Sundays only train to Szeged. Also present were M44 095, M41 2154, and MDmot 3038 which worked the 1438 Debrecen-Eger ( presumably only on Sunday, the info is not clear in the timetable). -Train 1505 Budapest-Eger was routed via the shunting yards at Eger instead of the direct line, something that sometimes happens if they don't want to hold up trains due having to manually set the switches at the entrance to Eger station, after shunting moves etc. This train was hauled by the repainted V43 1299, which returned on the 1837 Eger-Budapest train. -BVmot 001 (with power car 002) worked the 1730 Eger-Budapest IC. Presumably BVmot 003 (with power car 001) worked the 0710 Eger-Budapest and the 1630 Budapest-Eger services. I couldn't take the number as we passed it just outside on the mainline at Fuzesabony, but the third set hasn't been working recently and it was a BVmot. There will be a direct Eger-Keszthely IC from June 13 to August 30, but no Keszthely-Eger service according to the timetable, although the connection will be available with a 42 minute fester at Keleti instead of the 20 minutes to turn the set when a direct service. -M41 2120 was spotted at Hatvan around 1830 -V43 1303 worked the 1843 Aszod-Vac train with two cars. -M43 1112 was at Rakos at 1900 -M43 1140 was shunting at Budapest Keleti at 1920 -V63 153 worked the 1240 Zagreb-Nyireghaza train from Balatonszentgyorgy and V43 1021 took over at Keleti -As usual, OBB 1014 015-0 worked EC Franz Liszt from Vienna, now retimed to arrive Budapest at 1852 -V63 040 worked 1920 Budapest-Szombathely IC -V63 045 worked 2020 Budapest-Warszawa "Bathory" with a single direct car Budapest-Moscow. On Tuesdays it has an additional Thessi-Moscow sleeper. That is all for today. More news when available. --- Date: 26-May-98 Hi, If you can, check out the following: http:/www.c3.hu/~levego/actual.htm Bzmot 400 and 402 have been seen in Budapest-Nyugati working the Esztergom trains but no M40's spotted shunting there so far. As the IC karts now work to Eger, the Szeged InterCity traions received the rebuilt MAV coaches, with now a restaurant car added for comfort, as the IC karts only have trolley buffet service. The Miskolc IC's are the new DWA 160 km/h cars. The IC karts are devistating inside. During the two years of operation, parts have been stolen, screws unscrewed etc. That'a a Hungarian end to an otherwise nice train. The same is happening to the conventional IC and international cars. Ferenc --- Date: 30-May-98 Hi, Today the Tolnay Railway Club ran a special train on the 13-km-long industry spur to the Visonta power plant. Bzmot 186 ran light from Fuzesabony depot to Kal-Kapolna to pick up the gang and continued to Nagyut, where the spur branches off. Speed restrictions of 30 and 10 kph make the trip more than 30 minutes long. There are 10-12 trains a day and only one train can be on the line due to the lack of sufficient signalling, so the line is busy. There are four M44 type industrial units, all painted orange like the MAv units. Their numbers are A25 017, 022, 098 and probably 112. There is a facility where two wagons can be tilted simultaneously to empty the coal loads and at another place the wagon is rotated and turned upside down. The latter was working in our presence. The charter train cost 400 HUF/person, some 1 pound 25 pence! Eger ICs working as qutoed the last time. M61 017 standing at the shed doing nothing in Rakos. ZSR Class 750 at Hatvan depot. OBB Class 1014 now having 4 turns as the O/N Kalman Imre Budapst-Wien has been added to their duties. M41 2116 hauled train S9801 the 1437 Hegyeshalom-Gyor-Veszprem-Pecs train between Gyor-Sarbogard. Train 968 the 1724 Budapest-Deli to Celldomolk was M41 2164 from Szekesfehervar today. Train S9701 the 1620 Tapolca to Budapest-Deli was M41 2119. However, train 9711 the 1805 Balatonfured to Szekesfehervar was M61 006. M41 2139 powered the post train that doesn NOT carry passengers and consisted of only two vans between ???-Szekesfehervar. It crossed with train 908 at Varpalota. leaving towards Szf.var at 1928. M62 213 hauled train 908 the 1800 Budapest-Deli to Szombathely and M62 215 hauled train 901 the 1740 Szombathely to Budapest-Deli on the un-electrified section between Szf.var and Sz.hely. There is now only one speed restriction due to a bridge on the new alignment between Sarpentele and Csor- Nadasdladany, but this causes the trains to slow down just after reaching a good travelling speed and not enabling them to go as fast again afterwards ( especially in the uphill direction). V63 013 powered the 1735 Budapest-Keleti to Venice Venezia-Express between Budapest-Balatonszentgyorgy and V63 046 the Saturdays only Fonyod-Munchen O/ N "Kalman Imre" between Fonyod-Budapest-Keleti. (On other days it is Budapest-Munich only). More on Monday or Tuesday night. Cheers, Ferenc --- Date: 05-Jun-98 Hi, I had some travelling the last two weekends. Here are the moves. At the end of the message please find further spottings and diagrams. Cheers, Ferenc SATURDAY, 1998. MAY 23. This was the last day of the old tt and I wanted to ride some of the trains that ran for the last time. I started with a friend on the O/N postal to Szombathely. He went all the way but I alighted at Boba for scratches and a brief meeting with my grandpa who was at the time staying at Lake Balaton in Badacsonylabdihegy. The postal no more stops at Boba but you can still catch the connecting train at Celldomolk. My friend talked the driver of the diesel on the postal train into accepting us into the cab. So much about doss! At Szekesfehervar M62 141 was leaving with a freight towards Veszprem, covering the station wit hthick black cloud! My grandfa got on and rode with me to Badacsony where we wondered around the lakeshore and the hillside and had a drink at this early morning hour. The reason was that I was taking the last Alutus train (377) which doesn't stop in Badacsonylabdihegy. He soon had a train back for the 3 mks after I left. I met the friend on the train as arranged and parted with him at Budapest. After a brief visit home (just 5 minutes away from Nyugati station) I could have used an M41 (especially after Lajosmizse) but the ride was still OK. I had an insect move before heading to Lakitelek and even managed to buy Edmonson type tickets at Katonatelep while waiting for a fast train to pass. In Kecskemet I also photted the locos at the depot, especially the M28 with central coupling device for shunting Bzmot units. I also observed a shunt move onto train 7034 (M44 118 added two cars that were previously stored at platform 1). Finally I reached Jaszszentlaszlo where I got on the stopper that used to be carrying the Belgrade-Moscow coaches of the Puskin express. The sleepers were shunted onto the portion from Szeged at Kiskunfelegyhaza but I couldn't get on as the doors were all closed. Somebody else was photting from a distance, no idea who. I took the LAST Puskin via the triangle at Cegled all the way to Puspokladany as I was heading home to Debrecen to the other grandma. However, I did fit in the CFR diesel. We were a bit late but luckily so was the Brasov train. I got off one stop short of the border which turned out to be just right as my train crossed the international there. SURPRISE, it was an M44 on two Bx (red) coaches. Supposibly there are two diagrams apart from the Bzmots, one an M41 and the other an M44 one. After purchasing a beer from the vendor ourside the station who was already closing, a final scratch took me home with the last direct Wien- debrecen Arrabona train. I must admit I was pretty lucky all day today, especially with only just one of the Szeged engines dud and no Bzmots around Tapolca, though I did have more than I wished for near Lakitelek. After travelling for almost 23 hours and covering 940 kms, I finally went to bed. ---- 0025 Budapest-Deli V43 1161* 14900 0025 Budapest - Szombathely 0116 0130 Szekesfeherv. MAY 24. The first day of the new tt saw me on the move. Several plans were made up but the preferred ones were to see the new InterPici (InterTiny) services either to Ozd forwhich I should have taken the EC Bela Bartok or out of Nyiregyhaza which would have ment a visit to Zahony afterwards. Also, I investigated how I could ride the first extended EC Lehar to Satoraljaujhely. At Debrecen, by helping out an American couple to buy their ticket, I failed to realize that it was already departure time so I missed the EC train just by seconds. The gripper wouldn't make it stop for me. Thus I had to take the stopper with a thought of riding the InterPici to Mateszalka. However, at Nyiregyhaza only a conventional rebuilt Bzmot showed up so I went to Szerencs for the EC. M41 haulage in OBB cars - not bad. The only trouble was the 1st class and dining car behind the loco ( which were MAV) and the windows that couldn't be opened. 9 other passengers were on the train upon departure from Szerencs. At Satoraljaujhely I photographed engines in the scrap line and had to show my permit. The train back was already wedged by Szerencs. I got off at Mezokovesd for the Sunday-only Szeged train which was also full to standing only. At Fuzesabony I was surprised. A new liveried engine was on my train to Eger. I asked the driver and he explained that these are the new Budapest suburban colors, which will be applied to 250 coaches in the next 2 years. I got a cab ride and we entered Eger via the freight yards which joins the Putnok line with a triangle before reaching Eger station. Trains are sometimes diverted here as the points at the entrance to Eger station are operated manually and it sometimes take 10 minutes to set them for a departing train after one has arrived. Well, the next train to depart was the new IC service to Budapest utilising the IC kart, but it still had some 20 mintes to wait. There were about 50 people riding this train on the first day, although a Sunday, which is always busy. The ride back was smooth but I still have to get used to the sight of BVmot's and HZ 1142's (which are sometimes referred to as V47's now) in Keleti station. ---- 0848 Debrecen V43 1047* 6132 0848 Debrecen - Nyiregyhaza 0937 1040 Nyiregyhaza V43 1013 5115 1040 Nyireghaza - Miskolc 1127 1216 Szerencs M41 2189* IC502/EC41 0646 Wien - Satoraljaujhely 1307 1359 Satoraljaujh. MAY 30. Our Tolnay Klub arranged a charter train to the Visnta power plant in Northeastern Hungary. I had time for a quick insetc move before the slow ride down there (13 km long branch with 30/10 kph restriction). After the visit I needed to get some Kolomna hot air conditioner. I even had time to visit the office for some papers while crossing Budapest. At Szekesfehervar I was going to stay on the train if it was an M61 but bail if it wasn't for a possible M62. Bailed at Varpalota to phot smoke and not have a tight conection for the return trip. Made the connection at Szekesfehervar on the way back and rode the old DB couchette of the Saturdays only extension of the Munich O/N. ---- 0605 Budap.-Keleti V43 1045 520 0605 Budapest - Satoraljaujhely 0730 0814 Kal-Kapolna V43 1046 5157 0710 Miskolc - Hatvan 0820 0848 Nagyut V43 1352* S5502 0705 Budapest - Eger 0853 0906 Kal-Kapolna Bzmot 186 13519 extra Kal-Kapolna - Visonta 0950 1335 Visonta Bzmot 186 13514 extra Visonta - Kal-Kapolna 1410 1415 Nagyut V43 1025* 5025 1305 Miskolc - Hatvan 1434 1440 Vamosgyork V43 1037* 593 1330 Miskolc - Szombathely 1552 ---- Bp.-Keleti ---- 1734 Bp.-Kelenfold V43 1232 968 1724 Budapest - Celldomolk 1817 1908 Szekesfeherv. On the platform at Szolnok I met a friend from Budapest who was there at the depot to photograph outdated passenger stock. After a brief visit home I rode to Celldomolk. Upon arrival I leaned out to see what engines are around and suddenly somebody shouted at me from the platform: Hey, railway photographer! He was a guy from the ornithology camp where I was heading just now, but I as I was getting off he was getting on. I went around to take note of engines at the depot and by the time I got back it got too late and my train that I wanted to take to Boba for the next one to Tapolca had left, so I had to settle wit hone dud engine instead of getting a scratch from the other one, which left Celldomolk just 4 minutes earlier. This meant the end of my excellet scratching session of the day and my last engine was dud as well. Clive rode to experiment in Romania but would be back in two days. ---- 0900 Budap.-Keleti V63 028* IC21 0900 Budapest - Cluj-Napoca 1030 1058 Szolnok V63 027* 627 0650 Zahony - Budapest 1221 ---- Bp.-Nyugati ---- 1410 Budap.-Keleti V43 2178* 595 0959 Satoraljaujhely - Szombathely 1600 1610 Gyor M41 2191* 595 0959 Satoraljaujhely - Szombathely 1718 1741 Celldomolk M41 2164 961 1741 Celldomolk - Budapest 1834 1848 Tapolca M47 2026 9541 1848 Tapolca - Balatonszentgyorgy 1934 ---- Fenekpuszta MONDAY, 1998. JUNE 1. Slept in my tent that I store at the ornithology camp and heard that the 0537 train to Fonyod was a NOHAB. Decided to take it on the way back for the other NOHAB from Szombathely on the Kaposvar-Pecs train. During this I acquired some Edmonson type tickets. Then I made plans to visit my grandma who was on holidays at Badacsonylabdihegy and possibly cane in some more M61s. This was achieved and even managed to buy more tickets when we had the crossing at Badacsonmytordemic-Szigliget and when I bailed for the stopper at Polgardi-Ipartelepek. M61 006 on load 9 was performing quite well, especially up the slope and at high speed under the wires. I Kept meeting people as when I transfered to a faster train at Szekesfehervar, I bumped into a colleague from the office. Being the end of the holiday the last three trains were all full and I had to stand between Szekesfehervar and Budapest. On S9701 a shouting woman with shoutng kids and a barking dog got on and they wouldn't shut up, especially one of her boys who was so wide he almost didn't fit into the double seat. Today I finished off my M61s today (I was lucky with the last two) but note that I have only been keeping track of them since October 97! The M62 was a surprise but should be regular. ---- 0725 Fenekpuszta M61 001* 8642 0640 Fonyod - Tapolca 0805 0813 Tapolca M61 004 S8807 0625 Szombathely - Pecs 0931 0951 Belatelep M41 2197* S8802 0700 Pecs - Celldomolk 1032 1300 Fenekpuszta M62 113* 9514 1252 Balatonszentgyorgy - Tapolca 1343 1435 Tapolca M61 010* S9703 1435 Tapolca - Budapest 1455 1637 B.ladbihegy M61 006* S9701 1620 Tapolca - Budapest 1846 1911 Polgardi-Ip. Possibly from Pecs and the HZ 1142 came through to Dombovar, although there is a 17 minute fester at the border. There is still a speed restriction near the tunnel where the wall came down on the tracks on KBS 29 and a speed restriction at one point of the new alignment on KBS 20 near Csor-Nadasdladany means that trains have to slow down just after picking up some speed and they cannot do it again before the new alignment ends in either direction. loszfal, 140-es palya Diagrams These are now officially Szekesfehervar diagrams some of which are done by Tapolca crews.
