The Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad

	Passengers board 1920 vintage coaches at the Race Street Station
in Middletown, Pennsylvania for a scenic, eleven mile, 1.25 hour round
trip train ride along the scenic Swatara Creek to Indian Echo Caverns. As
the train makes its way along the towpath of the historic Union Canal 
(completed in 1827 and operated until 1884), a narrator relates the
history of the Canal and the M&H Railroad. Passengers may disembark at
Indian Echo Caverns for a 45-minute cavern tour. Combined tickets are
available.

	Points of interest along the line include remaining sections of
the Canal, a canal lock, century-old limekilns, and Horse Thief Cave.
Passengers have a beautiful view of the Swatara Creek valley as the
train crosses the creek on a 35-foot high bridge.

	Motive power on the M&H consists of two GE diesel-electric
locomotives. #1 was built in 1941 and #2 was built in 1955. A former
Canadian National 2-6-0 steam locomotive, built in 1910 may be in
operation for special occasions. The M & H uses lcomotive #1016, a
1000 HP diesel electric built by ALCO in 1969, on its freight trains

	The original M&H Railroad was incorporated in 1888 by local
businessmen. Construction began in 1889 and the line was completed in
1890. From 1890 until 1976 the M&H was operated as part of the Reading
system. Since 1976 the M&H has been an independent railroad.

	Visitors to the M&H Railroad may browse through the Middletown
"yard" where several pieces of rolling stock are on display. These 
include streetcars, a snowsweeper, and a wooden box car with link and pin
couplers. A guided yard tour is offered each operating day at 12:15 pm.
