OPERATING A FAIRMONT MT19A MOTOR CAR Thoroughly inspect the entire car for safety and mechanical faults. Repair any faults BEFORE operating the motor car. Check and fill engine crankcase as needed with proper lubricant. Check and fill fuel tank as needed with proper fuel. Pull out extension lift handles when setting car on and off the track. Be careful not to strike axle sprocket on rails. Use care in setting off at crossings, switches and frogs so axles are not sprung by pinching wheels in flange ways. Avoid heavy jars and rough handling at all times. Always drive with engine ahead in normal service. After starting and warming the engine, board passengers with operator facing forward. Depress clutch and shift Forward/Reverse lever to forward. Also with clutch depressed shift High/Low lever to low. Release the brake, gradually open throttle and slowing release clutch pedal. When underway use throttle to regulate speed. Accelerate to a speed of 12 to 18 mph, close throttle, depress clutch and shift High/Low lever to HIGH. Release clutch and throttle up to speed. Shift carefully back to LOW on heavy grades and slow speeds. Run in HIGH whenever possible. Do not operate the car at speeds above 20 mph when in LOW gear as engine damage could occur. Drive a new car slowly and carefully until thoroughly familiar with the controls. A speed of 20 to 30 mph for the first 500 miles is recommended. To stop the car, close throttle and apply hand brake to completely stop. Depress the clutch and shift HIGH/LOW lever to neutral position. If car is to be removed from the track, shut off the engine. To reverse the car, first bring it to a complete stop. Depress clutch and shift Forward/Reverse lever to the reverse position and HIGH/LOW lever to LOW position. Gradually open throttle, release the clutch, and drive the car in reverse using HIGH or LOW as conditions require. * END *
