DEPARTMENT SOUTHERN RAILWAY SYSTEM --STANDARD PROCEDURE-- TITLE:MOTOR CARS AND INSPECTION CARS ORIGINAL ISSUE DATE: 11-15-75 ALL PREVIOUS PROCEDURES AND INSTRUCTIONS IN CONFLICT HEREWITH ARE SUPERSEDED TO THE EXTENT OF THE CONFLICT UPON RECEIPT OF THIS PROCEDURE I. General. A. M-19, M-19R, and MT-19A motor cars and designated (by the Vice Presidents Transporation and Engineering) high rail vehicles will be used as INSPECTION VEHICLES. These will display the authorized INSPECTION sign on the front of the vehicle, as required by the AVP-MW&S, and may operate on line-up authority as provided for by SR Operating Rules. B. The Fairmont manual of service instructions and parts listings must be kept on each Fairmont motor car for ease of reference. C. Major repairs or alterations to motor cars or inspection vehicles are not to be made by outside firms. Charlotte Roadway Shop will make repairs according to Southern Railway Standards. II. Inspection of the Motor Car or High Rail Vehicle. A. Before operating a motor car or inspection vehicle it must be given a good visual inspection for loose bolts, missing cotter keys, fuel leaks, improper wheel gauge, worn wheels or brakes, malfunctioning rotating safety light, and other items as instructed. A running brake test must be made before starting the trip. B. All motor cars must be equipped with a Fairmont wheel gauge No. M19889, for measuring wheel wear. The condemning limit for motor car wheels is a minimum of 1/8 inch. If any point on a motor car wheel is worn to this minimum, it MUST be replaced. C. Inspection cars must be provided with rail sweeps at the front end. Sweeps must be frequently inspected, kept in good repair, and in sweeping position when the vehicle is in motion. They should be adjusted to a clearance of 1/16 inch, not to exceed 1/8 inch above the rail head. III. Operation. A. Due to the importance of rule observance, all operators of on-track equipment must be familiar with and obey SR operating rules 800-834 and regulations that apply to inspection vehicle or motor car operation. B. The employee in charge of the motor car of inspection vehicle must have passed the annual rules examination and must have in his possession the current rule examination certificate, as well as the current timetable and an approved watch as prescribed in SR Operating Rule 2. C. All motor cars and inspection vehicles approaching a highway grade crossing must be prepared to stop short and must not enter the crossing until the way is known to be clear.
