APRIL_19.TXT, Phil A. Hughes
RAIL/90: In Preparation for April 19, 1997
April 19, 1997 can go by as any other day, in which case relatively little can be accomplished relative to what can be accomplished. If we let things go, our border with Mexico will be opened up completely, leaving the US and Oklahoma in particular open to drugs, illegal aliens, disease (witnessing the recent Hepatitus-A outbreaks in California and Michigan), and possibly terrorism if the United States takes unpopular stands. And if we are not free to take unpopular stands then we are nothing.

6-axle MLW freight power on passenger train
A unlikely combination. Big 6-axle MLW freight locomotives hustle VIA #75 west at Clarkson, ON in April 1978. At that time power-short VIA Rail habitually borrowed CN power at the weekends. Usually they would get 4-axle power, but on April 10th, 1978, railfans across southwestern Ontario did double-takes as #75 drew this unlikely duo. CP MLWs, the final days...
In April and May 1998 all but a handful of CP's small MLW road units were retired for sale or scrap. In May 1998, RS18 #1838 still had some life as it headed toward Toronto at Lovekin, ON. The lone non-MLW diesel is a GP9 that was added at Smiths Falls when the C424 spluttered, coughed and died. This is another part of my hand outs for the clinic that I am scheduled to present in Chicago July 13 - 15 at the Santa Fe modelers convention on track work and track layout design. The discusion is based on my experince working in the record and map and standards section of the Santa Fe and Historical research.

The town of Cassandra, PA, is a railfan friendly little place , just off highway 53, railroad west of Horseshoe Curve. The mayor of the town likes to come down to the tracks in his pickup and get visiting railfans to sign the guestbook. The old highway bridge over the tracks is a vantage point for photographers where the undergrowth has been cleared by the town. The mayor operates this convenience store where a railfan can stock up with supplies (chips, Twinkies, Pepsi etc.). Photo and scan by John Reay, 1999.
