Corky Price Amtrak 742 Amtrak SW-1 741 sits idling on the ready track at the Coach Yard, Washington, D.C. It is about 7:00 on the morning of May 11, 2001. This unit was built by EMD in 1948 and has a whopping 600 horsepower. There are a couple of its sister units around the terminal, as well. The Coach Yard is midway between Washington Union Terminal and Ivy City and is used mainly to store and maintain the Virginia Railway Express equipment which I operate. |

I base my thoughts on mostly data as provided in the documentation. The data includes occupied seats per trip. The poorest group, Short Distance trains, 110.7 average, NEC 159.8, Long Distance Services 210.6. But the cuts and reductions, as pointed out in the document, only followed usage on some routes, not on others. You will see which routes Amtrak favors. |

Richard Thompson British Columbia Electric 1304 at Trolley Park Former BCER 1304 on the forest loop at the Oregon Electric Railway Historical Society's museum at Glenwood, Oregon in April, 1979. 1304 as it now exists was completely rebuilt in BCE's Kitsalano Shops in 1946 following a fire on the car. It was originally built in 1911. The car has 54 seats, is 55' long and weighs 86,000 lbs. It has 4 GE-204 motors and GE control. Trucks are MCB. BCE was Canada's longest interurban. |

It is used primarily as a 'cab car' in that it still has its controls and can MU through the train to the engine (or 'motor', in this case) on the other end. As with the Virginia Railway Express trains I operate, this type of service is known as 'push-pull' and the train can be operated from either end. I met this train on the morning of May 11, 2001 while I was taking my train the the Coach Yard for my layover. |
