VGN Class "EL-3-A" 3-unit VGN electric locomotive
This is a zoomed scanned copy of the 1925 "Electric Railway Journal", p.843 photo of VGN unit # 100 soon after delivery. Units were constructively derived by their builders ALCO and Westinghouse from N&W´s class "LC-2" two-unit locos (## 2512 ff) of the short-lived Bluefield-Vivian-Williamson "Old Elkhorn Tunnel" electrification scheme. Units inspired German Railways to re-design their cl."E 77" articulated units into cl."E 75" rigid-frame locos, albeit using different electric traction motors.

Typical Soo Line Lashup
A typical Soo Line lashup of the 1970's seen in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, October, 1979. Leading is SD40-2 770, trailed by SD40 744 and ex-Wisconsin Central F7A 2201A, purchased in 1949 in a 3-unit locomotive set: 2201A & 2201B (F7A's) and 2201C (F7B). Built between 1949 and 1953, the GM Electro-Motive Division F7 locomotives were the best selling cab type diesels in history: 49 railroads purchased 3,716 F7's and 27 railroads purchased 314 FP7's.

The Soo Line was created when three railroads merged in 1961: Minneapolis, St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie (controlled by the Canadian Pacific and nicknamed the Soo Line), it's Wisconsin Central subsidiary (leased to the Soo Line since 1909) and the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic (also controlled by the Canadian Pacific). The DSS&A didn't purchase any F7's but the original Soo Line and the WC purchased many of them. When this photo was taken, 2201A was the last F7 on the roster. 3 way meet at NL tower
At NL tower on the Algonquin Valley, AJ12 stops for it's pusher to be attached. This is a regular occurance at this location, except that most trains stop before their head end gets this far. AJ12 is extra long today, hence the blocking of the 2 mains. In the meantime, a empty hopper extra with 2 GP-9's stops at the cross over, waiting for the main to clear.
