Turn a Compact Car Into a Sub-compact!
Not a scratch on the UP AC6000CW after it rear-ended a compact car that had hung up on the tracks. The car was abandoned after the occupants tried unsuccessfully to drive on the rails (as in the movies!). They went to find a tow truck, but UP soon removed the vehicle for them. The heavily customized car was spun around at the next grade crossing, as Gary Zuters and friend watched in amazement. Note muffler still wedged under the pilot. West Shore Through 1.25" Chain Link Fence
Taken through 1.25" chainlink on the Vietnam Mem. Br. Teaneck NJ North view. Adjust camera to have lens wide open, and touches the fence. Slower film helps and in addition to composing and focusing the camera must be shifted to minimize pattern from fence. This taken at angle down & to right. Normally I would crop but this photo shows it is possible to photograph through chainlink. Note: 2" is easier! Preparation - grading and stakes - for a 3rd siding between CP7-CP10 shown here, but now it has been changed to install a 4th also. The River Line is single track but CP10 is still within yard limit.

Photographers Gary Zuters and John Reay travelled to Kingston, ON in the dead of night to photograph VIA's unique specially painted F40 #6429 as it was waiting to lead train 655 on Saturday June 27, 1998. The unit is painted as part of a promotion with Home Hardware, a national Canadian hardware store chain. For this shot John Reay used a Minolta 7xi, 50mm lens at f5.6 using Fuji Provia 100 slide film, with the shutter on it's bulb setting. Gary Zuters provided the lighting with several #2 flashbulbs, fired off at intervals as he walked around the engine, with John uncovering the camera lens at the appropriate moments. John also donated about half a pint of blood to the mosquitoes [grin]. The VIA conductor jobs were abolished at the end of June. It so happens that the train pictured in this image was the consist for the last regular run by VIA conductor Eddie Hayman, one of the two regular conductors on the train I commute on every weekday. © 1998 John Reay & Gary Zuters.

Derail on the Gateway Western - 1
First in a series showing the results of the derailment of a grain train and the salvage operations as well as the efforts undertaken to clear the line. This is a textbook result of an emergency brake application that happened when the locomotive and first car air lines separated....the majority of the cars were destroyed and destined to be scrapped.
