Damage to Loco after Car Crash.
Another reminder about cars, level crossings and locomotives. The damage to the cowcatcher and buffer plate (three quarter inch steel) doesn't seem much, but the front coupler penetrated the car until it was almost touching the gear stick. The loco was doing 20 km/h, the car 80 km/h when it hit the train on the crossing. The vehicle was a police car and both occupants were killed. The loco is 24 3664 run by Friends of the Rail in Pretoria, South Africa. Photo by Trevor Staats 1997, all rights reserved.
