"Eurotunnel's Interim results"

The results are disappointing. They are filling the trains - especially the car shuttles - but reducing the fares, so that profitability is down. In fact they are not covering the interest payments this year.

Eurostar (not owned by Eurotunnel) is more disappointing as they are failing to attract passengers, despite some signs that they are better value than the cheap airlines that are attracting the market. However, Eurostar may feel the benefit of the first phase of the fast rail link which is due to open in September.

Eurotunnel has plans to go into the freight train market by running its own trains from Dourges (near Lille) to Daventry, and also some piggyback as far as Folkestone. Perhaps they will take them on to Dagenham when the second phase of the fast link (CTRL) is open in about 2007.

Rather pessimistic comment on the results

Eurotunnel really needs to earn more from its rail freight proposals.
