"Trans-Siberian Railway All-Electric"
12-Jan-03, 11:22 AM (MST)
News media had it on 24 December that the Trans-Siberian Railway was opened for through electric trains featuring a cl. WL80 (or a look-alike) twin unit during the celebrations.

Q.: As views on the essentials of the event, namely isolators and wires, remained scarce, I have no idea so far whyt of the two RZD voltages is being used, 3kV dc or 25 kV 50cps ac ?

Any information around ?

Kind regards

CTW, DE-Goslar

This is a great achievement. Now, let's see more electrification in the US (and in the UK - still stalled by financial meanness, even in the southern area.

Hope this won't be deemed a "suspicious activity" ... well, do the wires still hang over the Tumbler Ridge Branch ? Operational now and then ?

In general, an alleged downturn of economy won't help the case for electrification, either.

Hard to swallow. Where the heck is the *real* problem ? Stronger power surges of new trains ? In lieu of official reading, I'd say the energy consumption will remain roughly the very same.

Kind regards, CTW

Well, I meant new electrification from Hastings to Ashford International and the Uckfield line - both 'diesel islands'.

But the lack in the US is still a mystery. There can be few more hostile environments than Siberia, but the Russians did it.

I think Ashford to Hastings has fallen victim to "Boiling Frog Syndrome", in that the likely cost has risen to the point that it's no longer viable.

Because of the fragmentation of the railway following the botched privatisation, a totally out of control and unaccountable Health and Safety bureacracy imposing gold plated safety rules, and complete lack of cost management on behalf of Network Rail, all infrastructure projects are now costing three or four times what they should. This has killed a lot of projects.

An awful lot of people need to go up against the wall when the revolution comes...

PFM pestering ya again - is that latest gap bridged with 3 kV dc or 25 kV ac ?

How many electrical system changes are now deemed normal on the "Transsib" ?

Kind regards, CTW

I have no idea. Where would the details be published (other than in Russian)?
