"CA fires to threat Cajon Pass operations ?"
01-Nov-03, 12:18 PM (MST)
Hello,

came across some sketchy maps in the press here, with remarks about fires in the San Bernardino and Cajon Pass areas.

Any rail operations affected by recent forest fires ?

Events seem to have been prone to severely damage lines East of San Diego, too (ist that line the SD,A&E RR ?).

Any ideas about that ? Damage to rolling stock ? BTW, Ed's report about a smouldering lumber car had given me the final kick to post this question here ...

Kind regards,

CTW, DE-Goslar

The pass was closed to rail traffic for at least part of the time. I have also read that both UP and BNSF have a shortage of rested train crews in the area as schedules are so messed up. In fact the rail corridors have been used as fire breaks. Much of what didn't burn in the last big wildfire season has now been burnt especially east of I-15 up towards Summit, which will serve to extend the closure of the "forest" lands within the pass to recreational use (e.g. railfans) Much gnashing of teeth on other railfan internet forums on that subject. My brother-in-law, who lives in Wrightwood, just a few miles up the mountain from I-15/CA-138 interchange at Mormon Rocks, has been keeping me informed.

Merde. Hope no trestles or other infrastructure was lost. Nor rolling stock; "rail corridors as fire breaks" don't sound like a healthy action. Wonder if it helped to stop any fire, anyway. Except if RR-s ran tanker trains filled with water to sufficiently wet the railzone by spraying action, through sorts of that interconnected tanker car set (the BNSF "oil cans" unit trains, just filled with water ...) or similar train consists ?

Thanks - with lots of sympathy (
But in hope rail traffic has recovered by now ...
