Whoops - GNER 125 Faces Trolleys on Track
Taken just after a departing GNER 125 had to make a sudden stop during
its take-off run after the driver saw catering trolleys piled up on the
track around the corner. Edinburgh Waverley, platform 1 (follows on from
platform 19 from where the train departed). The GNER mechanic is moving
the carts and the train proceeded with just a few minutes delay. Twist

99% complete after an overhaul lasting many years, this loco has now been

Due to a lack of servicable stock, the class actually lasted slightly longer
on the LT&S. Now the class will no longer be seen in passenger service
as the last have been withdrawn.

On the seat is the Conductors revinue bag. Behind is the PA and the LoudaPhone.
To the right are the Track Circuit Operating Clips and a nice big crow
bar. 302's also came with a nice little 'food warmer' (out of picture to
the left) that took hours to warm up.

317 EMU in the 'Striking New Livery'
A 317 travelling ECS to Pitsea on LTS Rail. When they got their first units
(317 301-3), LTS Rail made a big thing of the colours. They ran it to Shoeburyness
at night so the punters didn't see it, and then used it on their busiest
service. Unfortunately nobody noticed the paint job, and the passengers
all complained about the lack of seats. These were the same passengers
that demanded the end of the 302, 310 and 312's. Go figure!

Class 91 Locomotive, 91002 photographed at Wakefield, Yorkshire in September
of 1992. These locomotives are incorporatrd into a semi-fixed push-pull
formation, consisting of a driving vehicle trailer (DVT) at one end and
the locomotive at the other. In this photograph, the locomotive is propelling
the train from the rear. The class 91 is capable of speeds in excess of
160 mph, although at the present time the maximum operating speed is 130
mph.

The cliff railway which links the seaside village of Lynmouth (North Devon
in the Exmoor National Park) with its twin village of Lynton, 600 feet
above. The railway rises on a 60% grade, and is entirely powered by stream
water - hence the large green tank underneath the passenger platform. The
passengers may look apprehensive, but in nearly 100 years of operation
the railway has never had an accident!

This loco is designed for heavy-duty freight trains. It can be fitted with
engines rating from 1600 to 3400 KW. To apply power to the wheels, either
three-phase current or DC can be used. The axleload may vary from 14 to
25 metric tons, thus yielding a loco mass from 84 to 150 metric tons. The
gauge can be varied between 1067 mm and 1676 mm without any alterations
to the chassis. The maximum speed is rated at 160 km/h or 99 mph. The loco
is diesel-electric. It can currently be seen in the Kassel (Germany) area.
It has primarily been built for export purposes. A first fixed order has
been placed by Pakistan Railways; other railways interested are DB AG (Deutsche
Bahn AG, German Railways) SJ (Svenska Järnbane, Swedish Railways).

DR (Deutsche Reichsbahn) Diesel Hydraulic 118-726 is arriving in West Germany
at the border station of Helmstedt with relief train D10346 from Berlin.
The light weight train of five carriages was running because of a bank
holiday. The 118 returned to Berlin as a "pilot" loco on D345, the next
train to Berlin, working in tandem with 132.414 Russian built Diesel Electric,
as far as Berlin Zool Garten station. Photo taken on 27 October 1984.

Deutsche Reichsbahn - Remains of Loco 132 at Wittenberge
On Deutsche Reichsbahn (East German Railways) the heavily cannibalised
remains of a Russian built class 132 Diesel loco are outside the north
end of the depot at Wittenberge. The identity of the loco remains a mystery.
The loco has been involved in a collision and only one very bent cab remains.

Danish class MY Loco 1152 in old livery - Křbenhavn
DSB (Danish State Railways) Loco 1152, a very battered looking class MY
classic "Nohab" built GM powered loco, at Křbenhavn with a southbound local
train. Still in the excellent purple livery with classic DSB Gold crown
painted on the front. One of the final series production loco's, the exhaust
silencer can be seen on the loco roof, a long thing design, earlier examples
(1145 and earlier) had twin stacks. The photo was taken on 3 July 1984.

37 431 'Sir Powys/County of Powys'
Class 37/4 locos were introduced between 1985-86 as rebuilds of the Class
37/0 locomotives. Main changes were the replacement of main the generator
with an alternator, the provision of a HEP alternator and the fitting of
regeared trucks. On the 29 March 1988 Class 37/4 #37 431 'Sir Powys/County
of Powys' stands in the locomotive stabling sidings at the North end of
Bristol Temple Meads station. The name plates have since been removed and
now carries a different livery. Class 33/0 #33 064 is at back.

Sign of the Times - Summit Board at Corrour
The derelict and partially collapsed summit board at Corrour station on
the West Highland Line. This is the highest point on the line and the highest
and most isolated station on the British Rail network with no road access
and mains water or electricity supply. Despite millions going to fund the
privatization of British Rail there is no money available to refurbish

Class 37/0 #37 142 in Civil Engineers livery with a three coach rerailing
train on the Par to Newquay branch line at St Blazey. The locomotive having
hauled the train out of a siding to the right of the line is now propelling
the train to the site of a freight train derailment on the branch line.

'Chunnel' Vision
View of the interior of the Cannel Tunnel taken approximately one and a
half miles into the Northern running tunnel looking towards France. The
picture was taken on the 7 May 1994 from the cab of a Class 319/0 EMU.
As part of the celebrations to commemorate the opening of the Channel Tunnel
Class 319/0 EMUs were being used to provide trips into the Chunnel for
the general public.

A Swiss Federal Railway bi-level train of the S-Bahn Zuerich is just entering
the Zuerich Hardbruecke stop. The train consists of a Class 450 locomotive,
a second class car, a combined first/second class car and a second class
cab car. Up to three units can be combined for rush hour service. The locomotive

The attractive rustic designed Laxey Station building at Laxey Station
on the Manx Electric Railway, Isle of Man, photographed in August 1995.
The station building was originally sited at the terminus of the Snaefell
Mountain Railway. When the Snaefell line was extended into the Manx Electric
Station at Laxeya few years after its openening in 1895, the station building

train often goes into this loop, to allow the Florina - Thessaloniki train

OSE (Greek Railways) ALCO DL543 A-324 is seen at Kozani, ready to return
to Thessaloniki at the head of train 722, the 10.40 departure. The 222km
journey takes about four hours, and is enhanced by some beautiful scenery
en route. On paper this service should be operated by a DMU Railcar, but
in reality it is always a locomotive and two passenger carriages. Picture
is taken on Sunday 19th April 1998.

Greek Railways OSE MX627 MLW A-461 is seen at Thessaloniki with the overnight
train 605 to Athina. Seen on a cold but clear winters evening, a zoom lens
shot of the train in the long platform. Moments after this shot the steam
heating for the carriages was put on. The train started from the Bulgarian
border town of Svilengrad at 09.25, a total journey of about 1100km. Photo

OSE (Greek Railways) MLW MX627 Locomotive A-465 is seen at Pireas Port
station after arrival from Thessaloniki with train 501. The 510km journey
is one of the most breathtaking journeys in Europe, and one not to be missed.
The final 9km from Athina to Pireas finishes by traveling through the back
streets of the busy suburb of Athina, on very poor condition track. Photo

Greek Railways Canadian built MLW Locomotive A-501 is seen at Kozani with
the lunchtime train to Thessaloniki in May 1997. Quite unusual for one
of these large 3,600 hp ALCO engined locomotives to be used on the branch
passenger train run. The loco was in excellent form, depositing large amounts
of black exhaust when leaving each station on the 222km run back to Thessaloniki.

613, the 06.40 Ormenio to Thessaloniki, on this day the big MX636 had worked

at this station, on this occasion with Alsthom loco A-369 (behind camera),

the one coach passenger train for Florina. The 34km branch line is often
one of these little ALCO loco's in the Summer months. In the Winter they
are not so common on this line. Only the A-201 and French built A-351 classes
are permitted to go over this line due to weight restrictions.

OSE Greek Railways class A-551 "Craiova" built 1982 by Electroputere in
Romania, fitted with a "Resita" built 16 "R" 251 ALCo engine, of 4000hp.
One on ten such examples, used mainly on the Athina - Thessaloniki main
line. Only one Loco still in use in mid 1998, mechanically a good engine,
but the Romanian electronics and traction motors are very troublesome.

Valencia at about 05:00 in the morning, at the head of the southbound Bilbao
and Irún to Alicante overnight train "Sol de Levante". The train at that
time was a regular duty for a pair of Diesel loco's between Zaragoza and
Valencia. Nowadays the train runs only at weekends and it's Electric powered

normally used over the border into Italy. Due to engineering works for
five weeks in the summer of 1998, freight (and one passenger train) was
diverted over the normally freight only border crossing from Nova Gorica

Another BR GIF from the past. This time it's the Totem, a lozenge shaped
logo used on most items of BR paraphanalia between the 50's and right up
until the 80's in some cases. Although mainly used as station signs, the
totem appeared on publicity as well, although as far as I'm aware never
on traction or rolling stock - can anyway tell me different? The regions
different colours were used in the totem: Orange - North East, Light Blue
- Scotland, etc.
